When you start planning your senior portraits, it is completely normal to feel a little nervous about what to do with your body once the camera turns on. Questions like "Where do my hands go?" or "What if I look awkward?" are the most common things high school seniors ask me before a session.
The secret to amazing senior portraits isn't practicing poses in the mirror for hours—it's learning how to relax, move naturally, and trust your photographer to guide you!
Downtown Alexandria is one of my absolute favorite Northern Virginia spots for senior sessions because the cobblestone alleys, historic brick backdrops, and waterfront paths give us endless variety to explore. During a recent Downtown Alexandria senior photoshoot, we leaned into simple, natural movements that made the session feel like a walk through Old Town rather than a stiff photo shoot.
1. Cross Your Legs for Instant, Relaxed Lines
Standing straight and flat toward the camera can make anyone feel stiff and tense. One of the easiest tricks to create immediate shape and ease is simply crossing one leg over the other.
Whether you are leaning back against an Old Town brick wall or standing on the waterfront pier, crossing your legs at the shins or ankles instantly shifts your weight. It creates natural angles, softens your stance, and gives your body a relaxed, casual posture without requiring any complicated adjustments.
2. Bring Your Hands to Your Face
(The Hair-Tuck Move)
The single biggest question every senior asks is: "What do I do with my hands?"
When your hands are hanging empty by your sides, it creates unnecessary tension. Instead, give your hands an active job by using natural, everyday movements. One of my favorite go-to prompts is the gentle hair-tuck: bring one hand up toward your face or collarbone as if you are about to tuck a stray strand of hair behind your ear.
This small gesture brings your hands into the frame with purpose, frames your smile beautifully, and creates a soft, candid moment that feels totally natural.
Don't be afraid to change your height! Dropping down into a low squat or sitting on historic stoops is an incredible way to add variety and dynamic energy to your gallery.
Squatting down allows your outfit to drape naturally, gives you something comfortable to rest your elbows on, and instantly brings out a playful, cozy vibe. Pair a low squat with a big, genuine laugh, and you have an automatic highlight photo for your album.
Trust Your Photographer to Handle the Rest
The most important thing to remember on photo day is that you do not need to be a professional model.
Your only job is to show up, wear an outfit you feel confident in, and enjoy the moment. A great photographer will guide your placement, adjust your angle, adjust your arms, and catch the real, unscripted laughs in between poses. When you give yourself permission to play and trust the process, your real personality shines through every single shot.
